Massachusetts: Independents respond to campaign formulas?

The minority party stirs (Boston Globe editorial) . ..The pocketbook focus is wise. In 1990, William Weld broke the enduring hold of the Democratic Party on the corner office with a canny combination of fiscal conservatism and social libertarianism. In the suburbs especially, independent voters responded to that formula, and it held through three successive Republican governors. Even Mitt Romney pursued the same line until his sharp turn to the right in order to woo national Republican constituencies....

How quickly the Globe forgets - wasn't it just several months ago that independent voters CREATED the campaign issue they wanted addressed (the war in Iraq) and made it clear that the political status quo in this country isn't going to hold? The '06 vote was not in response to a campaign gimmick.
